Skill & Flair on Focus at Bartender Shakedown & Mixology Matters Cocktail Competition
By Rachel Galvin
Creativity and flair were on display at the Bartenders Shakedown & Mixology Matters Cocktail Competition October 9-10 at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott. Bartenders came from around the world to participate and compete for about $10,000 in prizes. This two-day competition was competitive and engaging. When this reporter attended, on the 10th, they had a back and forth dynamic happening between a flair competition and a sustainability cocktail competition. The flair competition had three levels: Pro, Advanced and Amateur. Bartenders juggled bottles, flipped their tools and glasses and showed their stuff with style for great applause from the audience. The sustainability cocktail competition involved the bartender talking about the history behind their original craft cocktail using local farm to table, sustainable ingredients, and then showing how they made it for the judges to sample. There also were other competitions judging skills like accuracy and speed.
Contestants were whittled down to the winners. And the first-place winner in the pro competition will go on to represent the United States and the United States Bartenders’ Guild in the International Bartenders Association World Cocktail Championship in 2024, and the 2nd place will represent the United States and the United States Bartenders’ Guild in the International Bartenders Association Pan-American Games in 2024. The event also serves as the Flor de Cana Florida qualifier for 2023, with the overall 1st place winner in the Cocktail Competition representing our region in the Flor de Cana Sustainable Cocktail Challenge Finals in Nicaragua.
Some other awards that were slated to be given include categories like Most Accurate Bartender, Best Mixology Skills, People’s Choice Award, Most Honorable Bartender and more.
There also were samples of alcohol available for those in attendance and they could find out about different brands. In addition, the conference included interesting workshops on various topics that would educate everyone from the ambitious bartender to the cocktail enthusiast looking to up their own game.

Foodies flock to Boca Bacchanal 2023
Photos & Story By Rachel Galvin
Foodies flocked to The Addison on Saturday, April 30, for the annual Boca Bacchanal Grand Tasting. The stormy skies went away and attendees were able to roam in the courtyard and throughout the different rooms where everything was happening. This was the place to be. There was plenty of wine to sip from such vintners and distributors as ZD Wines, Silver Oak, Twomey Cellars, Domaine Carneros, DAOU, St. Supéry Estate, Coppola, Hahn, Hope Family Wine, Luca Bosio and many more. Guests could pair their wine with delicious samples of culinary delights provided by some of the area’s hottest restaurants, including The Addison, as well as Ramen Lab Eatery, Oceans 234, Gourmetphile, Bazille, Max’s Grille, Capital Grille, AlleyCat, Big in Japan, Atlantic Grille at The Seagate Hotel & Spa, Lemongrass Asian Bistro, Sicilian Oven, Poke Company, Blis Foods and KakaoZON Ecuadorian Chocolate.
In addition, there was a silent auction with plenty of high-end luxury items for guests to bid upon, including The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary Release Decade I, a Holland American Cruise for two and much more.
The Grand Tasting followed the Vintner Dinners that happened the night before. There also were seminars to teach guests more about wine and whiskey, by ZD Wines and Macallan Distillery, respectively. Boca Bacchanal was kicked off by a private hangar party called Bacchus Beckons.
Guests enjoyed mingling by the Banyan trees outside while reveling in food and drink. The Five Star Diamond Award-winning event venue has a unique charm. It was built by famed architect Addison Mizner in 1926.
The event, which is in its 20th year, benefits the Boca Raton Historical Society and The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum. For more information, visit www.bocahistory.org.
JA World Uncorked 2023

Photos & Story By Rachel Galvin
Exotic, glamorous, risque, festive, exciting… These are all words that could be used to describe Moulin Rouge. Perhaps, that is why the enticing concept was used as a theme for the latest JA World Uncorked, held on January 28 at the JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion, 1130 Coconut Creek Blvd. in Coconut Creek. Hosted by the Circle of Wise Women, this yearly event benefits Junior Achievement of South Florida.
The theme wasn’t the only thing they changed this year. The event continues to improve, and this year, they brought in more money than ever before – a historic $345,000 and more than 700 guests!
Also this year, the food options seemed more diverse than ever, and delicious, everything from a light and airy panna cotta to a soul-satisfying smoky pulled pork. Guests could start with trying a Caesars salad and tortilla soup and maybe grab some of Yot’s famous fish dip and move on to items like sliders, prime rib, pasta, sashimi and countless other delectable options from local restaurants, and then finish with desserts like cookies, cake, cream puffs, tarts or Italian Ice.
The spirits on hand were just as plentiful and varied. Guests could choose a refreshing and lemony light KLEO-Patra, a mixture of the Greek spirit KLEOS, lemon juice, simple syrup and basil, or opt for a taste of a creamy Pennyslvania Dutch Salted Caramel drink. They could sip their favorite wines, grab a gelatin shot, choose a craft beer from Funky Budha, enjoy Canyon’s prickly pear margarita and more. There was even an espresso martini cart, by Gray Robinson, P.A, where the purveyor got on the bicycle attached and pedaled to grind his own coffee! Yvette and Bob Birdsong sponsored a welcome cocktail for everyone… the Capital Grill Stoli Doli. The variety of wine, spirits, beer and seltzers kept guests happy all night long and the culinary options kept them smiling. DJs played music throughout while guests roamed.
Corseted “can can girls” in red and black set the mood, as did silk aerialists in cages enticing the audience. Meanwhile, the music was pumping, courtesy of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. People could place their bids on high-end silent auction items, sponsored by Truist. There was also Daoud’s Fine Jewelry raffle and Florida Power & Light’s ring toss to keep people entertained.
The boudoir photo experience was certainly different and got everyone into the act, whether lounging in a bathtub of plastic “bubbles,” wearing a large feather boa or other accoutrement, or posing with Moulin Rouge props. The photo experiences were courtesy of EY and Centuric Cloud Computing.
The Florescue Family Foundation Sponsor Lounge also created a VIP space for sponsors to enjoy. Others sponsors included presenting sponsor Breakthru Beverage, CITY Furniture for sponsoring the bars, ESG Safe for sponsoring the lounge, JM Family Enterprises for sponsoring the JA BizTown Pavilions, Moss & Associates for the Funky French Cafe, Comcast for the wine charms and Office Depot and Miller Construction Company, as the DJ sponsors.
After a night of revelry, people could grab a Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital “Joe To Go” coffee within a take-away sparkly coffee mug. As they walked out, they could take a last look at the luxury cars out front provided by Rick Case Automotive Group.

A crowd assembled within The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum on July 20 for the 2nd Summer Sips & Sounds event. People could first peruse the museum, which was completely renovated last fall. Next, they could mingle and enjoy hors d’ oeuvres and wine provided by The Seagate Hotel, before sitting down to enjoy the concert. The music theme was the ’70s this time and guests were delighted to hear some old tunes they had not heard for some time. Joanne Marie Kaye, who also is the executive director for the Festival of the Arts BOCA, took on the role of singer for the event, with Rick Krive also singing and playing the keyboard, and Scot Klarman playing the saxophone. They sang songs from The Carpenters, Carole King, Elton John, the Eagles, Manhattan Transfer and others.
“The 1970s was an exciting decade in Boca Raton as the town was experiencing exponential growth and change: the Historical Society was founded, I-95 was completed through Boca, Arvida was building gated communities, and IBM had arrived bringing an influx of new families,” says Museum Executive Director Mary Csar.
There will be one more Sips & Sounds on September 21. That one will focus on music from World War II. It will again be held at the Historic Town Hall, 71 North Federal Hwy., in downtown Boca Raton. Tickets for the concert are $30 for Boca Raton Historical Society members and $40 for non-members. For more information, visit www.bocahistory.org.

Chef Bravo whips up Summer BBQ specialties for a hungry crowd
By Rachel Galvin
With skill and humor, Chef Elvis Bravo, from Seasons 52, created some culinary specialties on July 31 in front of an audience live at Galleria Mall. It was a special event called Cooking With The Galleria LIVE and the culinary theme was Summertime BBQ. Attendees were able to try each item created by the chef when he was done. It was a fun, fresh idea that guests seemed to really enjoy.
People may have seen Chef Bravo showing his skills on video demos online (at www.facebook.com/GalleriaFtLauderdale) since the pandemic started, but now he was finally able to do it in person. Working on a stage above the crowd, he went step by step through how to make his tasty and light creations that were convenient to make and perfect for summertime eats. The items he cooked up were Melon Basil Burrata Salad with Crispy Prosciutto, Blackened Mahi Tacos and Lemon Blueberry Icebox Cake (see recipes below).

Chef Bravo said that doing demos online has been a great way to reach out to guests during the pandemic. “We were doing take-out only and wanted to reach out to guests. It was fun to connect with guests not in the dining room,” said Bravo, adding he had not done anything like this event before and saying there are three or four more appearances in the works at the mall.
Bravo gained his love of cooking when he was young. “I always knew cooking was my passion,” he said, saying his mom always cooked. The dedicated young chef attended Le Cordon Bleu before working in hotels, and finally Seasons 52 in Coral Gables and now in Ft. Lauderdale.
He likes to stay on brand (with Seasons 52), which means serving up seasonal ingredients, only the freshest. He said he likes using fruits and veggies when they are in season because they are at their peak flavor. “I like to feature simple ingredients and I like to have fun. A lot of people are scared of cooking. I hope to take the intimidation away,” said Bravo.
This event was not just about attendees learning how to make simple culinary creations, but also about giving back. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefited the Heart Gallery of Broward County, a nonprofit organization committed to finding loving families for the hardest to place foster children.
The event also was created to help promote another event that benefits the Heart Gallery of Broward County, called “Eat Your Heart Out,” which will be held Oct. 7 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the mall. The event will include gourmet food and drink, live entertainment, a silent auction and more. Arlene Borenstein, of the Sun Sentinel’s “Let’s Go South Florida” feature series, will host. Participating restaurants include Boatyard, The Capital Grille, Cooper’s Hawk Restaurants & Winery, Culinary Republic, Eddie V’s, Lips Fort Lauderdale, MOKSHA Indian Brasserie, Press & Grind Café, Riverside Market and Café, Seasons 52, Sicilian Oven and Tarpon River Brewing. (Additional restaurants TBA). The honoree will be the Moss Foundation, to be named Child Advocates of the Year. They are a nonprofit that assists other charitable organizations, including Arc Broward, Broward Public Library Foundation, HANDY, Jack & Jill Children’s Center and others. Tickets for the event are $150 per person and include complimentary valet parking. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.heartgalleryofbroward.org or call 954-918-3008.
But, before that, there will be another Cooking With The Galleria LIVE event, also benefiting the Heart Gallery of Broward County. It will be held in the mall held Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. and featuring the Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants Chef and Senior Area Culinary Operations Manager Stephen Puhr. He will prepare Classic Tomato Bruschetta, Gnocchi Carbonara and Cooper’s Hawk Berry Crisp. Attendees will be able to sample this delicious trio while receiving tips on the perfect wine pairings. Tickets are $20 per person and space is limited. Guests may register at https://bit.ly/MeetChefStephenPuhr.
